GUIDED DIVES - NOVEMBER 2013
After completing our SSI open water course my partner (and buddy) and I wanted to fast forward to advanced open water level. For SSI this means logging 24 dives and completing the specialties both practice and theory at the same time. As advised by our local dive school we decided to visit The Long Hose in Lanzarote (mind you, the time is November in the Netherlands). We realized that completing that much in 8 days would be too ambitious and just wanted to cram as much dives as possible in our limited time.
When we arrived we knew nothing about The Long Hose or the people who run it. We didn’t know anything about their expertise, their experience, or vision. Looking back at it now, I thin k we just hoped to dive a lot and be more experienced, but we never anticipated to learn as much as we did. We would dive twice a day, and sometimes three times. We’ve seen beautiful Playa Chica and its amazing inhabitants, the Old Harbor with its wrecks and magnificent stingray Stumpy. We planned several skill dives to perfect our frog kicks and breathing, and a night dive. Our last days were very pleasant, at this point we could effortlessly apply all we’ve learned, and especially for me this was a fantastic experience: to consciously control my body and buoyancy during a fantastic long wreck dive, and a beautiful depth dive introduction day.
Witnessing Mike take every opportunity to test his intern in DIR and UTD, and correcting his dive master student, also reflected a bit on us. I won’t say we were naive before we got there, we already did act responsible and know how to use common sense, plus our open water course learned us as much as it could have. But I can say that without this crash course we could never have achieved great buoyancy, body control and confidence that we have now. It made us 10 times better divers then we were before. I feel terribly embarrassed now to witness other divers' irresponsible behaviour, affecting the environment and their own (and buddy's) well-being.
Besides that our stay was a real eye-opener in every way, we also just had a fantastic time in Lanzarote’s climate, with Mike (a character in itself!) his exceptional partner Alexia, their talented and friendly Swedish intern Timothy, Spanish teddy bear and dive master student Miki, and facilitating dive school ‘Lanzarote Diving’. We are forever grateful!

UTD ESSENTIALS OF OVERHEAD DIVING - APRIL 2013
"The Essentials of OH Course was for me was my first introduction/training with UTD/DIR. With over 10 years experience both recreational and technical its always nice to learn something new. Perfecting and polishing old and new skills, getting equipment set up correct and learning UTD/DIR protocols. Mike did not fail in any aspect with a relaxed and non intimidating instructional style but still insisting on only the highest standards throughout the course.
I was truly impressed with the passion and professionalism Mike showed over the course. Personally the reel and laying line procedure was my favourite part and something I was not really accustomed too, learning these skills I really enjoyed, especially while in control of the light, really neat and clearly a fine art to master as a team. This for me was an excellent spring board not only for further UTD OHE Classes but also as an intro to UTD/DIR way.
I thoroughly recommend anybody seeking to further there diving, to go thelonghose.com you will not be disappointed.
Thanks Mike. "

GUIDED DIVES - APRIL 2013
"I was visiting Lanzarote for a couple days of diving and got in touch with Mike based on an excellent recommendation of a friend whose diving experience I value a lot.
Mike exceeded my expectations and proved to be the ultimate diving professional. Our fun dives were both fun and very well organized with safety and skills’ improvement as the highest priority.
In my view Mike is one of few dive instructors for whom diving safety is more than just a marketing slogan. We spent a lot of time discussing diving safety and diving in general and it was a great experience to be able to learn from Mike’s broad experience both as a recreational, technical and cave diver.
Our dives were very well organized and included precise planning, pre-dive procedures, completing our dive plans and post-dive discussions. It is also worth mentioning that apart from being 110% precise and professional Mike is also very fun to be around and diving with him is a very nice experience.
I can fully recommend Mike as great dive instructor for any recreation or technical diver who would like to improve her / his diving skills and learn to dive with the end goal in mind: whether a complete beginner or a professional diving instructor."

UTD D.I.R CONFIGURATION & DIVING WORKSHOP - MARCH 2013
"On 9th March we ran a UTD diving workshop with Mike Van Splunteren from www.thelonghose.com. The day was a huge success from start to finish. Mike introduced us to UTD diving, its Philosophy, training and practise. We had 17 divers sign up for the workshop bringing different backgrounds, training and experience to the day. The morning session included a fantastic step by step presentation into the UTD system of diving with clear information and explanation behind the training and diving system.
Following the morning presentation we moved onto the equipment setup in preparation for the afternoon inwater session. This gave an excellent visual and practical session to back up the morning presentation. Here we were shown the importance of equipment set up, placement, order and balance of the divers equipment . Each part was demonstrated with clear reasoning behind each stage of the equipment preparation. The divers on the day were diving with twin, single tank and sidemount set ups and also single and double reg set ups. Both were cover in this practical session and soon it ws time to head off the Abades on the East Coast of Tenerife for the in water training and practise.
The condtions in Abades were perfect for the inwater practise. During this 1 hour session, Mike demonstrated various hose drills, simulated emergency procedures, bouyancy skills, and fin technique. During the session, not everything was as easy as Mike made it look but all the divers showed great technique and execution with the drills, alot of new skills we learnt and importantly alot of fun was had.
After the in water session, we had a final debreifing at Prosub to reveiw the inwater session and to hold questions and answer session with Mike.
We would like to say a big thank you to Mike, Alexia and Don Andreas for organising such a fantastic day and we look forward to working closely with you in the future. For more information about this workshop and training go to www.thelonghose.com.
UTD ESSENTIALS OF TECH/RESCUE - SEPTEMBER 2012

UTD RESCUE COURSE - SEPTEMBER 2012
"The course has been an amazing training experience, rising my diving skills to a much higher level that I had. With Mike as an Instructor I have learned how to move under water, not just breathe and discovering what it means to be a thinking diver. Thanks Mike for your extremely dedicated teaching in how to dive in the right way."

PADI OPEN WATER COURSE - AUGUST 2012
"I wanted to tell a little of my experience with Mike Van Splunteren. He was recommended by a good friend as one of the best, if not the best instructor I could find in Mallorca. Having no previous experience in diving before the PADI Open Water, all impressions were very good and the feeling of having a very experienced and concerned instructor which prepare his students as much as possible for diving during his courses. I really realize how good was the OpenWater course he taught me after my first experience going diving with other people. It felt a little weird to be the only diving horizontally while everyone else was diving at an angle and with slightly open arms, and soon appeared the advantages already announced by Mike, when going through a tunnel, all the divers in front of me lifted a significant amount of sediment from the bottom, and their air consumption was higher than mine. When going back on the boat, I told the guide that this was my fifth dive, and at first, he did not believe me and told me that the other divers had at least 25-30 dives, and that I was really good, especially at controlling my buoyancy, which filled me with satisfaction." (Translated from spanish)
WHY THE COURSE ALFREDO WAS SO DIFFERENT FROM STANDARD OPENWATER COURSES
Although the course was done entirely within PADI standards, I dedicated a lot of time on Trim, Fin kicks, Buoyancy and Safety Marker Buoys and less time on snorkels and senseless swimming around. No student has kneeled on the bottom, neither in confined water nor openwater dives.
Total bottom time on the 4 openwater dives was 265 minutes instead of the mandatory minimum of 80 minutes.
I also would like to thank Alfredo, Aitor and Samuel for their effort.

UTD ESSENTIALS OF TECH - MAY 2012
"For that, you've just finished a tech essentials of UTD with instructor Mike Van Splunteren (http://www.thelonghose.com) in Palma de Mallorca and I have nothing but good reviews about this training and this instructor. Firstly is truly humbling. I had dived with double bottlesSidemount course and thought that I would have great difficulty ... how wrong I was. In my previous courses taught me how to breathe underwater Now I have taught to dive, control my body, my position, my environment, be part of a whole (team) and manage a team of staff training needs as well as knowing how to respond to different situations that can make a chain of unfortunate events a tragedy.
On the first dive I did with Mike I pose the question "Will I get one day dive as this guy?". I've never seen underwater (except videos) control of buoyancy, trim and precise movements like these, and at the end of the course I can not say that the student surpasses the master, but I have improved 200% if and with training juajuajua get to beat him ;)
I recommend it to any Divers @ r like me feel deficiencies in their training and want to progress to other levels of training.
Thank you very much for everything Mike, I hope the future holds many dives together for me from now more fun and safe. "

UTD ESSENTIALS OF TECH - NOVEMBER 2011
"The Essentials of Tech course with Mike was unbelievably rewarding.
The structure and theory learned in the course, the way I Taught Me in a relaxed but very demanding Manner, plus the in-water sessions created a feeling so different to any other training Agency That I now feel as save and free underwater as I feel on my bike, riding through town!
Thank you Mike for All Those amazing diving sessions and The Time That Has Been Invested to make me a much safer and better diver. "
